National University English Debate (NUDC) is country’s biggest competition which involves universities accros nation. This year NUDC took place in Batam  on 19 – 24 August 2014. There are 113 universities competing in this year tournament. Debate team of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan (Muhammad Iqwan and Karjongko, English Education Department Students) managed to join national round after achieving grandfinal round in Kopertis V level along with UGM, UNY, and SADHAR. This achievement is continued in national level after they break through the semifinal round. This accesion is the first in the history of UAD debating chronicle.

Arriving with ordinary preparation Iqwan and Karjongko beat country top powerhouses like Universitas Bakrie and Universitas Negeri Malang. They got 14 victory points in elimination round which placed them in best 16 teams from 32 in octofinal. This round was not easy to be faced because the met Universitas Indonesia as OG, Universitas Hasanudin as CG and Universitas Negeri Sebelas Maret as CO. They themselves sit as OO and beat Unhas and UNS to accompany UI to the next quarterfinals round.

In quarterfinals round they once again compete with UI along with UM and Universitas Bakrie. The debate was very close with average to above average level. Adjudicators need a very hard discussion to decide the best two team in semifinals. The chair adjudicator Kario Teguh from Unika Atmajaya Jakarta finally came to the decision which opened their gate to semifinals round. Hard competition was not stop at that point, country’s top three powerhouses UI,UGM and Universitas Brawijaya were their rivals in semifinal round. The clashes between this giants is not an easy battle for them. They are forced to admit defeat which is very memorable. Even if they are defeated but it is a very wonderful accomplishment for them. There is a big hope that Debating Community universitas Ahmad dahlan want to do. It is a bigger challenges to join international competition such as Singapore debate open or Malaysian debate open. Hopefully there will be financial supports from campus. Break a leg!
